On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify the limits and opportunities for the sport scientist working in a clinical setting
2. Demonstrate knowledge of common sports injuries and discuss their aetiology
3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the role of exercise in injury rehabilitation.
4. Examine the aetiology of common medical problems associated with sports participation and their performance consequences.
Sports medicine is an important but ill-defined field of study, but encompasses the prevalence, aetiology and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injury. These topics are also of key interest to the sports scientist. In turn, it is important for the scientist to understand the limits of their expertise and be aware that the expertise of other may need to be called upon in the applied setting. Thus, the key academic theme of the module is that of the limits and opportunities of the sports scientist when confronted with medical issues in sport.

3. Injury rehabilitation.
4. Physiology of performance in athletes with spinal cord injury.
5. Immune function, overtraining and sports performance.
6. Drugs in sport.
