Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Understand the importance of recording and reflecting upon their skills, goals and achievements in a structured way.
2. Plan for a career that matches their interests and abilities.
3. Demonstrate understanding of the skills specific to a career as a psychologist.
4. Examine and evaluate different research tools available to carry out research as a psychologist.
5. Present their individual skills, knowledge and abilities in a structured and concise way.
Aims
Studying psychology requires students to develop a range of practical skills. This module will help students to identify and develop their academic skill base and to start the process of future career planning. The module will also provide a bridge between the core modules taught at level 1 and the core modules taught to students at level 2.
Brief description
This is a skill development module that aims to develop student'r employability skills in a number of the areas identified by the Higher Education Authority as being important to graduate recruitment. For example, problem solving, research skills, communication, improving own learning and performance, information technology, personal development and career planning and subject- skills specific to psychology

| Application of Number | Not directly applicable although students will be expected to comment on aspects of statistical analysis through the examination of research designs. |
| Communication | Students will learn how to present their ideas in writing in an organised way and how to assert themselves to advantage. They will understand the importance of information and clear communication when making application for employment and how to exploit these. They will know how to use the many sources of information available and how to use the most appropriate form of communication to the best advantage. They will learn to be clear and direct in their aims and objectives. Students will be expected to submit their work in word-processed format and the presentation of work should reflect effective expression of ideas and good use of language skills in order to ensure clarity, coherence and effective communication. |
| Improving own Learning and Performance | The module aims to promote self-management within a context of assistance from both the facilitator and to encourage students to build links with other university departments such as lifelong learning.Students will be expected to improve their own learning and performance by undertaking their own research and to exercise their own initiative, including searching for sources, compiling a list of their skills and abilities, and considering (under guidance) the direction of their future career paths and how they will meet their aspirations.. The learning log (PDP folder) will support reflection on and integration of thinking about the applications of psychology. |
| Information Technology | This module develops IT skills at every workshop. Each week a new skill is developed, for example students are expected to create a suitably formatted CV electronically, converting the files to PDF etc. Students will be encouraged to search for sources of information on the web, as well as seeking sources through electronic information sources (such as Web of Science, PsychLit and PsychInfo) as part of their literature search project or for employment opportunities, travel funding opportunities and information about their desired careers. |
| Personal Development and Career planning | Learning about the process of planning for their future career through the development of their portfolio of transferable skills. |
| Problem solving | This module is designed with a number of short pieces of course work which are completed in workshops to develop problem solving skills in a number of areas including practical skills such as job search, creating a formatted CVs and reflective skills such as PDP portfolios and reflective logs. Independent project work and problem solving will be one of the central goals of the module. |
| Research skills | The literature search component of this workshop will require that the students develop awareness of the tools available to assist in information gathering and direct those tools to solve a problem. This will help develop independent research skills as well as problem solving skills. |
| Subject Specific Skills | Students will have the opportunity to consider different careers in psychology through talks with experts in the field. |
