Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Evaluate the components of ruminant production systems.

2. Review and evaluate scientific literature and apply results to the development of ruminant production systems.

3. Explain how science can be applied to the improvement of ruminant production.

4. Discuss ethical and social issues related to the application of animal sciences.

Brief description

The module will look at how you measure performance both financially and physically, before taking the students through the different types of production systems. The module will then look at breeding, nutrition, animal health and welfare, and handling systems. In the final unit of the module will look at possible future systems of ruminant production and how the research show cased earlier in the module could help such systems.

Content

This module will comprise approximately 20 hours of formal input and will cover the following areas:
  • Reproductive technology
  • Genetic improvement
  • Dairy cattle production systems
  • Meat production systems
  • Meat and milk quality
  • Management and prevention of disease

The module will use recorded lectures and radio style interviews streamed through Blackboard as the principle method of formal input. These will be accompanied by a reading list with 'essential' and 'recommended' reading. The students will be guided through the course by a study guide for each unit and given 'case studies' on the topics that they are learning about to demonstrate how the research could be used. The units will also comprise formative and summative assessments where appropriate. Students will be encouraged to take part in forums with other students and their tutor to ensure collective learning occurs. The structure of the module is designed to encourage students to think about how the research they are learning about could be used within the agri-food industry and where possible the students will be asked to discuss how their own experiences could have been different or might be changed as a result of the research they are learning about.
