Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and importance of research in a business and management or marketing context;

* Demonstrate an understanding of, and distinguish between, different research approaches and critically evaluate the ethical implications of each approach;

* Identify, analyse and evaluate literature relevant to a specific research topic;

* Perform both primary and secondary data collection, identify and evaluate the limitations and benefits of different approaches;

* Analyse and evaluate data using a variety of tools and techniques;

* Communicate the findings of a research project appropriately.

Aims

This module allows students to learn different research skills and provide in-depth study of business-related research. It will give a comprehensive introduction to the subject of business research methods and includes the fundamentals of all modern and universally applied research concepts, tools and techniques.

This module provides Business and Management students with an understanding of the importance of an objective approach to research and the importance of self-reflexive learning. The module also introduces Business and Management students to the practice of research, including ethics and methodology, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Brief description

The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and necessary skills to complete a piece of business research. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to identify a problem and develop a research question; choose a research method and reflect on their positioning to the research; be able to construct a critical argument; perform data collection, analysis and present their findings appropriately.

Content

Lectures 10 x 2 hour lectures on following topics:

Lecture 1: The Nature of Business and Management Research. Formulating and Clarifying the Research Topic.
Lecture 2: Deciding on the Research Approach. Research Ethics.
Lecture 3: Critically Reviewing the Literature.
Lecture 4: Collecting Secondary Data.
Lecture 5: Collecting Primary Data.
Lecture 6-9: Analysing collected primary data using different tools and techniques.
Lecture 10: Writing and Presenting the Research Project.

Seminars (1 hour each, in groups of 16) in classrooms:

Seminar 1: Aims and objectives.
Seminar 2: Literature review, references and citation.
Seminar 3: Primary and secondary data collection methods.

Workshops (1 hour each, in groups of 16) in computer labs:

Workshop 1: Data analysis techniques.
Workshop 2: Data analysis techniques.
Workshop 3: Data analysis techniques.
Workshop 4: Data analysis techniques.

Help classes: 10*1 hour help session in classrooms
