Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Research and summarize current topics of interest to their degree.

2. Present and debate their summaries orally in a seminar format.

3. Write an article designed to communicate the subject to a general audience.

Brief description

The purpose of this module is to allow students to delve deeper into a topic of interest to them and of relevance to their degree scheme. They will not only learn more about their chosen subject, but also hone their skill for scientific research and communication. The module is based around the independent research of their topic, supported by a few lectures on specific communication skills. They will then practice those communication skills by sharing what they have learned with scientific peers and the general public.

Aims

This module aims to develop skills in critical thinking, synthesis and science communication.

Content

Two 2-hour workshops on specific communication skills, followed by student led seminars on chosen subjects.

Communication This module is focused on communicating research to a general audience, and several different formats are assessed.
Improving own Learning and Performance With feedback provided on the first seminar and first blog post, students are able to use formative feedback to improve performance on subsequent assessments.
Information Technology A range of IT formats are used during this module.
Personal Development and Career planning The aim of this module is to develop communication skills, that are key to enhancing employability.
Problem solving This skill is a key component of the presentation module, working out how to summaries information and present it in an accessible format.
Research skills This is a research based module that requires students to assimilate knowledge from academic literature.
Subject Specific Skills Students will be researching topics relevant to their degree schemes, and as such will develop further understanding of their chosen subject.
Team work There are elements of team working during the initial lectures/workshops.
