On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* identify the principal issues of knowledge management in organisations

* discuss the advantages and disadvantages of effective knowledge management within organisations

* interpret and analyse complex organisational information and knowledge management problems

*assess information as a resource

*explain a range of information audits and audit information

*map and audit the communication flows with an organisation

*discuss models which attempt to identify and explain knowledge transfer

*measure intellectual assets and capital using various techniques including the balanced scorecard

* explain the role of organisational learning and communities of practice to knowledge management

*discuss the advantages and disadvantages of effective knowledge management within organisations

Brief description

The module will explore the key concepts and techniques of knowledge management. Knowledge management is concerned with the effective management of an organisation's intellectual capital. The module will examine the relationship between information and knowledge management and information strategy and knowledge management. The module will focus on the role of knowledge and information in decision-making and on their contribution to strategic and management information systems. The relationship between knowledge and information and organisational culture and politics will be studied. Knowledge and information management techniques including knowledge and information audits and communication mapping will be analysed as well as the role of gatekeepers and intranets in the knowledge management process. Case studies of knowledge and information management practices in the private and public sectors will be used to highlight the role of knowledge management in practice.

Strategic information and management. Information systems and knowledge management. Knowledge management and information strategy. Information and knowledge management in the public sector. Knowledge management, information and decision-making. Motivating collaboration to generate knowledge capital in online communities. Networked information systems. Communities and virtual communities. Problems in the measurement of intellectual assets. De-constructing knowledge management.
