|Semester Assessment||Portfolio of work Comprising the following 3 elements: - A detailed proposal outlining a key research question for a literary studies dissertation OR a research-based writing project. The proposal should concisely outline the rationale and context of the project, and its scope for public engagement (c. 1000 - 1500 words). [20%]. - An annotated bibliography detailing the project's key primary and secondary sources, clearly explaining their significance and relevance (c. 3-5 pages). [20%]. - A 2000 word sample of the creative work, OR close analysis of the primary source/s, OR contextualized discussion of the research question. [60%].|

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Produce and analyse creative and / or critical modes of writing, and, where appropriate, a synthesis of those modes.
Demonstrate an understanding of a range of theories and debates about literature, the relationship between texts, and between texts and their contexts.
Demonstrate the ability to conceive of, plan and critically contextualise an original piece of research or creative writing.
Demonstrate an ability to present critical and/ or creative work to a professional academic standard.
This 10 week module introduces all MA students to the research skills and methods they will need to plan and complete a significant piece of original research or creative writing. The module will also enhance students' work in the taught module elements of their programmes of study, whether literary studies or creative writing (or both). The portfolio assessment is closely linked to the MA Dissertation and MA Writing Portfolio modules in which postgraduate taught courses culminate, thereby providing a link through the whole programme of study from beginning to end. Delivery is in two parts. Following an introductory session in which the assessment elements are explained and learning aims clarified, there are five two-hour sessions on particular topics relating to core research skills: 'Writing critically and presenting'; 'History'; 'Archives and collections'; 'Digital resources and electronic media'; and 'Impact and engagement'. In the four weeks that follow, each student is assigned an expert supervisor and has three intensive supervision meetings, plus one week of independent directed study. During at least one of these supervision meetings, each student will receive formative feedback (verbal and/or written) on draft work towards her/his assessment portfolio.
This restructured common core module consolidates existing research training for Literary Studies and Creative Writing and enhances creative-critical hybridization in PGT provision.
