Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the criteria for the awarding of a higher-level degree

Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the process of applying such criteria to the development of a personal research program

Critically understand and evaluative the qualitative dimensions of a research project and in particular the criterion of originality

Critically engage with various modes of argumentation in the context of legal and criminological research work

Locate and evaluate relevant legal and criminological research sources and demonstrate an understanding of their application, deployment and organisation within the context of a research project

Present a critical and well-informed understanding of the methods and techniques involved in the effective development of an original research project in the field of Law and Criminology

Brief description

This module will provide training in the planning, organisation and design of research activity in the legal, socio-legal and cognate interdisciplinary fields; in appreciating the concept and objectives of a research thesis; and in appreciating the range and forms of relevant literature and other material and sources and their use in constructing research argument.

Introduction to the module, types of research activities, criteria for higher degrees, the concept of the thesis
Planning and designing of research projects
Organisation and management of time
Written and oral dissemination, different styles and formats
Methods of argumentation
Issues of originality and the use of sources for the purposes of academic argument, including in the context of different formats and styles
Categories of literature and research material in the legal, socio-legal and cognate interdisciplinary fields
Designing and writing bibliographies, methods of source citation
Reflection on module and feedback on assessment

Transferable skills

Throughout the module, students will practise and develop their skills of research, analysis, time-management and written presentation. In seminars they will develop their ability to listen, understand and explain subject related topics as well as present a point of view orally and discuss their thoughts with the rest of the class; their assignments will enable them to develop their skills of independent research, analysis, presentation and writing (including data collection and retrieval, IT and time management). All learning throughout the module will be relevant to a career in any legal profession.
