Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

demonstrate fundamental skills in the various processes of drawing

work in a number of different media from memory and from observation

make an informed and personal response within the confines of a prescriptive brief, and be able to articulate that response, both in terms of their their own work and that of others

work towards prescribed briefs and deadlines

demonstrate an approach that is interdisciplinary or multi-media in conception

evidence a self-critical approach to artwork

demonstrate knowledge of the creative potential of working in both acrylic and oil paint

demonstrate fundamental skills in the processes of darkroom photography

produce a small portfolio of prints

Content

Students will study each of the FOUR areas of Drawing, Interdisciplinary Studio Practice (ISP) Painting and Photography in a series of five, weekly three-hour taught sessions in the form of drawing and painting classes, seminars, workshops and presentations, followed by an hour of tutor-led study time or, in the case of drawing, preceded by a one-hour introductory lecture.
WEEKS 1-5: I hour lecture followed by a 3-hour practical drawing class covering:
Week 1: Perspective and ‘Non-Perspective’ (i)
Week 2: Perspective and ‘Non-Perspective’ (ii)
Week 3: Recording Movement
Week 4: Drawing with Ink
Week 5: Drawing with Paint

WEEKS 1-5: 3-hour ISP class (seminars, group workshop and presentations) followed by an hour of tutor-led study time:
Week 1: Project Seminar and Launch: Maps and Mapping
Week 2: Seminar (ii)
Week 3: Seminar (iii)
Week 4: Group Workshop
Week 5: Student Presentations and Group Critique

WEEK 6: Small Group Tutorials

WEEKS 7-11: 3-hour practical painting class followed by an hour of tutor-led study time:
Week 7: Colour (i): Keeping a Logbook
Week 8: Colour (ii): Theory and Practice
Week 9: Texture
Week 10: Additives
Week 11: Supports for Painting

WEEKS 7-11: 3-hour practical photography workshop followed by an hour of tutor-led study time:
Week 7: Pinhole Photography: Camera and Darkroom Basics
Week 8: Working with a 35mm Camera
Week 9: Film Processing
Week 10: Introduction to Printing
Week 11: Printing

Brief description

This is an introductory module to the theories and techniques of Drawing, Interdisciplinary Studio Practice (ISP), Painting and Photography.

Aims

This module, in conjunction with AR10740 Art Practice A in Semester 1, aims to give students the technical understanding and self-knowledge necessary for entry into their second year.
