On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Write a research proposal.
2. Have an improved understanding of proposal selection.
The module is aimed at the development of a research grant and will provide the students with an awareness of the full process involved, which will cover the writing process, an understanding of funding bodies, the documentation and financial requirements, and the panel assessment process.
The main aim is to develop the grant writing skills.
Session 1: Planning a personal research strategy. To include the pathways to becoming a well-funded researcher, working with others, types of grants and suitability by career stage.
Session 2: Identifying an idea and what funders want. This could be related to their current PhD project and seen as follow-up funding or a distinct project. To include issues of timeliness, value for money, achievable targets, appropriate staff etc.
Session 3: The essential elements of a good application. To include clarity of research question and objectives, readability and writing style.
Session 4: Mock panel/s chaired by senior researchers (drawn from DoPGS rather than Grants Factory academics).
Mentoring: the in between-session mentoring will be done by the supervisors.
Assessment: mock panel results.
