Brief description

This module will enable students to engage in a minimum seven week placement in an organisation related to Education or International Development. This will give an unique perspective on the application of theory in practical situations and will develop the students' learning regarding the methods and practices of problem solving and decision making in a real life situation.

Aims

Enable students to develop reflective skills as they engage and understand their own learning processes in a work environment whilst understanding the relevance of theories addressed in campus based modules.
Develop an understanding of the difficulties and issues related to the application of theories in a practical education or development environment.

Content

This module involves a minimum of seven weeks of placement in a relevant organisation relating to international development, aid, charity or education. The student will be expected to engage with a variety of tasks and activities as requested by the organisation mentor and guide.
During this time students will be gathering evidence, in notes, artefacts, photos, videos and other methods with which to populate their portfolio of reflection, following the guidance provided.
The structure of the 7 week placement will be dictated by the type of organisation and work engaged with, subject to the reasonable demands required for the portfolio.

Application of Number Students may need to work with or present data where appropriate, both on placement and in the application of data in the portfolio.
Communication The ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, will be an essential element of the placement and portfolio. Students will need to develop logical and clear argument and show an aptitude for the effective use of information in a direct and appropriate way.
Improving own Learning and Performance The ability to reflect upon one’s own progress and identify and act upon one’s own development needs will be essential throughout this module.
Information Technology Students will need to use appropriate ICT throughout their portfolio and it is likely that this will also be a relevant element within their placement.
Personal Development and Career planning Students will need to continuously reflect upon their own practice and consider their personal development
Problem solving Students will need to show efficiency in the organisation of complex information and the ability to identify, describe and analyse the key features of the information. They will also need to take active part in the problem solving practical activities faced within the placement.
Research skills Students will need to use research skills in order to explore the practices they include in the portfolio
Subject Specific Skills Students will need to demonstrate the skills necessary for working in a professional environment.
Team work Whilst out on placement, students will be required to work with others and reflect upon this in their portfolio.
