Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Study the relationship between sport and exercise activities and interventions in a range of groups in various settings.

2. Appropriately evaluate sources of information.

3. Solve problems of a numerical and logical nature.

4. Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions in both written and oral formats to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Brief description

This module is concerned with the different designs for research projects and their applicability in human biology, health, sport and exercise contexts.

Content

Lectures and seminars will include the following:
Introduction to module and how this relates to everyday conversations
Scientific philosophy
Research considerations (e.g. validity; cause and effect; relationships)
Study design (e.g. within and between subjects; Case-control study; Cohort study; Cross-sectional study; Observational studies; Treatment studies; Prospective and Retrospective cohort; Randomized; Time series study; controlled trial; Double-blind randomized trial; Single-blind randomized trial; Nonrandomized trial; Non-blind trial)
