Aberystwyth University has been presented with the Green Flag Award for the second year running at its Penglais Campus whilst Llanbadarn Campus has also been successful in gaining the award for the first time.

The award was given by Keep Britain Tidy at the South West and Wales Award Ceremony at Cheltenham on 21 July 2016.

Aberystwyth University received this award by completing a management plan and being judged on the external areas of the campus, focusing on eight main criteria which include sustainability, conservation and heritage and Community involvement.

Paul Evans, the Ground Manager at Aberystwyth University, stated: “This Award is a tribute to all the additional hard work that the Grounds staff have put in to achieve this Award and for two of the University Campuses.

“It is a fantastic award to aim for, not only to help plan the management more structurally, raise the standard and continue to improve, but it also gives the staff involved recognition for their achievements. My aim is to continue to achieve the award and continue to improve.”

Aberystwyth University’s Penglais Campus became the first University campus in Wales to achieve the Green Flag Award when it was awarded the accolade in 2015.

The Green Flag Award is a UK-wide partnership, delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy with support from Natural Resources Wales (though this year’s award for Aberystwyth University was delivered by Keep Britain Tidy), and is the mark of a high quality park or green space.

It is judged by green space experts who visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
