Settling in at University

At first, University life is a thrilling blank canvas: your child will probably never have had so much unstructured time; never have had his or her own completely independent living space; never have had so much disposable income. As Arthur Daley put it, ‘The world’s your lobster, Terry’: and of course, it really is fantastic; but there are early priorities which are essential and early pitfalls which you can help your child avoid.

But before we go on to those, it’s important to reiterate two key points:

  • your ‘child’ is an adult now - going to University and managing independent living is part of the process by which he or she grows into full maturity;
  • like the vast majority of students, he or she will probably cope fine – and this is truer at Aberystwyth than most places.

However, there’s still some preparation you can do in the last few days and weeks to get your child ready for University.
