09 August 2017

Aberystwyth University’s flagship degree scheme in Physics has been given an overall satisfaction rating of 100% in an influential UK-wide student survey.

The stellar statistic for the Department of Physics F300 undergraduate programme was revealed in the National Student Survey (NSS) published Wednesday 9 August 2017.

Final-year undergraduates interviewed as part of the annual UK-wide poll also gave the Department of Physics an impressive 91% for overall student satisfaction, compared to the sector average of 88% for the subject.

The Department’s achievements are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top five higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction in the 2017 NSS.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 91% - seven percentage points higher than the UK figure of 84%.

Dr Andy Evans, Head of Physics at Aberystwyth University, said: “We are very pleased with the overall satisfaction levels given to our Physics degree and the Physics Department as a whole which demonstrate the dedication of our staff as well as the commitment of our students. It’s been a very successful year for us in general with our best ever graduate prospects published in the latest Destination of Leavers in Higher Education. We were also awarded the Student-Led Teaching Award for Department of the Year in May.”

If you’re interested in studying at Aberystwyth University’s Physics Department and finding out why our students are so satisfied with their courses, it’s not too late. We still have some clearing places left for the 2017-18 academic year or come along and visit during one of our Open Days.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 95% of Aberystwyth graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving university in 2016.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of all the UK’s higher education funding councils and other bodies, and interviews more than 300,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Students are asked to rate institutions on the quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources and personal development.

Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
