Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

If you are a not a UK national, nor an EEA national nor a Swiss national and intend to study certain programmes in the UK, you may also be legally required to provide an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. The types of programmes are noted on the UK Government's ATAS website but at Aberystwyth University, these are mostly research programmes in the sciences.

It is your responsibility to check if this scheme applies to you and for you to apply for ATAS clearance on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's site. There would not be any cost for such an application but please be aware that clearance may take between 3 and 5 weeks.

If your proposed studies at Aberystwyth University would require ATAS clearance, an instruction letter with the relevant JACS code and a mini-abstract for your proposed research will accompany your offer for a place, which will be issued from the Postgraduate Admissions Office (AQRO). Current students at Aberystwyth University who are seeking to extend their visas will also require ATAS clearance but should liaise with our International Student Advisor.

Further guidance on how to complete the ATAS form is also available.

Although we do not at present have any Postgraduate Taught Masters courses that require ATAS clearance, in the event that such a course is introduced then only the JACS code and a list of modules would be required.
