AberDoc PhD Scholarship Competition
AberDoc PhD Scholarship Competition 2018
The AberDoc is a prestigious fund for Research Postgraduates. These highly sought after scholarships are worth* approx £18,748 per annum. Successful UK/EU candidates will receive a grant for up to three years which will cover their tuition fees (approx £4,195) and also provide them with a maintenance allowance of approximately £14,553 and access to a travel and conference fund (£500 per annum). Non-EU students would have to cover the difference between UK/EU tuition fees and the non-EU tuition fees from their scholarship. However, there will be 3 additional President's Scholarships that will cover this difference in tuition fees. These will be awarded to the three highest ranked non-EU candidates for this competition.

Deadlines: The University's general deadline for the 2018 competition is the 1st March 2018.
N.B. Please note that the deadline for the Institute of Geography, History, Politics and Psychology and the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies is the 26th January 2018.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
Aberystwyth University is one of a number of institutions in the South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and has successfully secured funding for PhD scholarships in the arts and humanities. Successful students would be able to benefit from supervision and other training available at more than one university within the DTP. Please note that these awards are only available to UK (full awards) and EU students (fees-only) and are for new PhD students rather than current PhD students.
Please visit the SWW DTP website for further information, including subject areas and to register for the virtual iformation sessions, which will be held towards the end of November 2017. The deadline to register for this is 1st November 2017. Eligible candidates who register by the above date will be invited to the virtual information sessions.
Applications have to be submitted via the SWW DTP site from 27th November 2017 until the final deadline of 11th January 2018. Please take note of this timeline if you are interested in the 2018 competition.
Interviews will be held the week commencing 12th March 2018 with results being available in late March 2018.
Candidates must be UK/EU fee-paying students who are not currently registered for a PhD. Awards cover tuition fees (UK and other EU) and provide a stipend of approximately £14,553 (UK only) and are tenable for up to three years.

Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
BBSRC grants studentships for research courses in the field of biological sciences. Studentships at Aberystwyth University are currently available for studies leading to the award of MPhil or PhD at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences.
Full awards will cover tuition fees and a maintenance allowance set at the Reseach Councils UK level. Fees only awards may also be available and will cover tuition fees.

DEFRA awards studentships for research in the area of agricultural studies. At Aberystwyth studentships are sometimes available for MPhil and PhD courses at the Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences.

Disabled Students Allowance
Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) are grants to help with the extra costs a student may face because of a disability. Conditions covered include long-term illnesses, mental-health conditions or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
The ESRC provide studentships for students to undertake a year Research Training Masters and a 3 year PhD research programme. Studentships can therefore cover a period of 4 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. These studentships are offered on a competitive basis. Successful applicants will receive a studentship which covers their tuition fees and provides a subsistence allowance of approximately £14,296.
For scholarships commencing in 2017-2018, the competition deadline will be (12:00 noon) 1st February 2017 for both the Department of International Politics and the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences. Please contact the relevant academic department as soon as possible.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
EPSRC Research Studentships may be available at the following departments:
- Department of Physics (Material Science only)
The Department of Physics is part of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Diamond Science and Technology. Students will study for a funded MSc at the University of Warwick before embarking on a specific PhD project based at one of the partner universities.
The 4-year Scholarships for a 1-year MSc followed by a 3-year PhD will cover UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance allowance comparable to the Research Councils UK level (full-awards for UK students only; fees-only awards for EU students).

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
Quotas are usually allocated to departments to distribute to suitable applicants. Although we do not hold any quotas currecntly, the following departments at Aberystwyth have held quotas of NERC awards in the recent past:
