External Sources of Funding
British Council
International students are strongly encouraged to approach the British Council in their home countries at the earliest date possible to enquire about assistance. In addition, most British Council offices will have a library of resources that you can use to find out about independent charities and trusts that may have scholarships to award in your chosen field of study.

Chevening Scholarships
Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject and at any of the UK’s leading universities.
The Chevening programme began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international scheme. Chevening Scholars come from 116 countries worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU), and this year the Scholarships will support approximately 700 individuals. There are over 41,000 Chevening alumni around the world who together comprise an influential and highly regarded global network.
A new central Chevening Scholarships website, www.chevening.org, has been launched with the aim of giving Chevening Scholarships an even greater coherence and presence worldwide. Potential applicants can register their interest to receive alerts about application opening and closing dates and candidate guidance, and find out about priority subjects for countries which offer Chevening Scholarships. In addition to giving details of the Chevening application process, the website provides updates about latest developments in the scheme worldwide, and important information on applying for higher education courses in the UK more generally.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS)
(Students from developing Commonwealth countries only)
The University participates in the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme which makes awards for full-time taught Masters students. The award is intended to assist a student from a developing Commonwealth country who has the requisite academic background but cannot afford the tuition fee and is not eligible for any other British Government award. The award covers tuition fees, the costs of travel to and from the UK and provides a living allowance. Students do not apply for these awards; nominations are made from among the applications received by the institution. Do not therefore submit an application via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's EAS system. We will only consider candidates who have submitted formal applications for their place of study.
Students interested in staring their Masters course in September 2013 should apply for the place of study before 31st March 2013. Please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office for further details about the 2013 competition or see the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's website. Please note that for the 2013 competition, the award will only be available for students following one of the relevant Masters courses with either the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences or the Department of Information Studies or on the new MSc Food & Water Security course, although this is subject to confirmation.
