Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

The AHRC funds successful UK and other EU students who wish to study for Doctoral (PhD) Study, Research Preparation Masters (e.g. MA or MPhil) or Professional Preparation Masters in the relevant subject areas.  Please click here for further information.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)

 

BBSRC grant studentships for research courses in the field of biological sciences at Aberystwyth, are currently available for studies leading to the award of MPhil or PhD at the Institute of Biological Sciences.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The ESRC provide studentships for students who undertake a year Research Training Masters and a 3 year PhD research programme. Studentships can therefore cover a period of 4 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. These studentships are offered on a competitive basis. Successful applicants will receive a studentship which covers their tuition fees and provides a subsistence allowance of about £13,290.

This competition provides funding for those who wish to undertake a one year Research Training Masters and then a three year PhD programme. Those who have already completed a Research Training Masters may also apply. You are eligible to take part in this competition if you have been accepted for a research place in one of the following departments at Aberystwyth and have a first or upper second in your first degree:

  • Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences (for research in human geography only)
  • Department of History and Welsh History
  • Department of Information and Library Studies
  • Department of International Politics N.B. Quota of 2 awards held by International Politics
  • School of Management & Business
  • Department of Theatre, Film & TV Studies

Application is through the department so please contact the department for further information. Applicants must forward their applications to the relevant academic department by 1st March 2012. However, it is advisable that you contact the relevant department early in January regarding funding opportunities. N.B. Deadline of 27th January 2012 for the Department of International Politics.

DEFRA studentships

DEFRA awards studentships for research in the area of agricultural studies. At Aberystwyth studentships are sometimes available for MPhil and PhD courses at the Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences.

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

At Aberystwyth STFC research studentships are sometimes available to applicants for research degrees (physics only) in the Institute of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Please refer to the STFC website for more detailed information.

Entente Cordiale Scholarships

Entente Cordiale scholarships are awarded to outstanding UK and French postgraduate students to conduct research for one academic year on the other side of the Channel.
