MScEcon Research Preparation Masters Information Management (Distance Learning)

These programmes are AHRC approved research preparation Master’s schemes to enable you to progress to a PhD or MPhil in information management.

If you are naturally curious, enjoy meeting people, and enjoy analysing data, you are probably well suited for a postgraduate programme that provides you with research training and specialist subject knowledge. If you want to make a career, eventually, as a senior manager in information systems and services, then this programme should ensure you get a flying start.

Course objectives

At the end of the programme you should be able to:

  • Analyse the requirements of information users
  • Evaluate records management policies
  • Apply a range of quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques

There is a wide range of optional modules, enabling you to develop skills and knowledge in information literacy, or electronic records management, or knowledge management – the choice is up to you, and there is considerable flexibility.

The course should provide you with a professional qualification as well as the research preparation (the course will be put forward for accreditation with CILIP shortly). The scheme is based on a programme that is currently accredited by CILIP. For more information on the status of the accreditation please contact the Director of Learning and Teaching, Dr Judith Broady-Preston, jbp@aber.ac.uk

How is the course structured?

The programme is divided into two parts, Part One (taught modules) and Part Two (dissertation).

In Part One (totalling 120 credits), you take a specific research training module as well as some other core modules in information management. You choose from a wide variety of option modules, so that you can select the subject specialist knowledge and skills that you need. All the subject specialist modules will provide you with further support on research preparation. If you successfully pass Part One you may progress to Part Two, in which you will need to complete a 60 credit dissertation of not more than 15,000 words on an approved topic.

You may exit with a Diploma (at 120 credits) or a Certificate (60 credits).
