Psychology

 The Department of Psychology was established at the University in 2007 and has received excellent student satisfaction scores by its undergraduate students who are enrolled on range of single and joint honours psychology degrees schemes. In 2008 the department was awarded two fully-funded PhD studentships; one from Aberystwyth University and the other, aimed at developing Welsh medium psychology expertise, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government. The Department is expanding, with on-going staff recruitment across all areas of psychology, Masters programmes in Applied Health and in Qualitative Research Methods in development; and an expectation to develop its PhD community through its participation in the University funded PhD studentships competition. Excellent PhD candidates with enthusiasm for further study in an area complementary with the research interests of staff listed below are welcome.

Research

All members of the department are research active with a broad cross-section of interests in theoretical and applied fields using a range of research methods. The department has particular strengths in applied psychology in relation to health and medicine; social and critical psychology; and is developing its cognitive and biological psychology profile. It has a culture of innovative and inter-disciplinary research.

Dr. I-Chant Chiang: Psycholinguistics; political psychology; bi-lingualism.
Dr. Gareth Hall: Group processes; social identity; sport fans.
Dr Antonia Ivaldi: Music psychology, conversation analysis.
Dr Catherine O’Hanlon: developmental psychology, children’s colour perception
Dr. Rachel Rahman: Motivation theory; exercise psychology and health psychology.
Dr. Sarah Riley: Contemporary identity practices from a social constructionist perspective (including: gender, embodiment, youth culture, sexualisation, consumption), discourse analysis and visual methods.
