MPhil / PhD

The Department has a large and vibrant community of research students, mostly full-time, working towards doctoral qualifications.  Research covers textual, archival, performative, empirical and philosophical studies.  It includes work in English and Welsh, and across the whole range of theatre and drama, performance studies, scenography, media and communication, and film and television studies.

An important part of any doctoral provision is the wider research culture in which you are embedded.  We offer an annual programme of research seminars, with high profile visiting speakers and performers; a series of methodology seminars, designed to strengthen both specific and generic skills in all postgraduate students; and an annual three-day research conference, attended by staff and all postgraduates, in which we share ideas and problems intensively.

The Department offers opportunities for full-time or part-time study towards the MPhil and PhD degrees in a number of different areas including modern and contemporary drama, performance research and theory, and various aspects of film, television and radio.

Entry Requirements

For a PhD we require a good first degree (2:1 or overseas equivalent) and for an MPhil a at least a 2:1.  Masters degree (applicants without a Masters will initially be registered as MPhil students and subject to satisfactory performance will be upgraded to PhD).  Prospective students should ensure that they have arranged with referees for their references to be available as required.
