The Aberystwyth Certificate in Translation (Welsh)
The Aberystwyth Certificate in Translation offers you the opportunity to establish a solid foundation in translation practice ahead of further study in Welsh or related employment. This part-time, one-year course in Welsh translation is taught jointly by the Departments of Welsh at Aberystwyth University and Bangor University.
The certificate is a professional qualification for translators, and has been established in response to the call (from the Welsh Language Board, employers and others) for translators whose capabilities can be vouched for according to rigorous standards and whose standard of work can be guaranteed.
Over the course of your study, you will attend four sessions in Aberystwyth and four sessions in Bangor where the expertise of both departments will be directly available to you. You will be assessed via small weekly assignments, one larger project and a written examination. You will be required to manage your own study time and maintain high levels of organisation and self-motivation.
Studying for this Certificate in Translation will allow you to sharpen up all your knowledge of and fluency in the Welsh language, as well as improving your professional work ethos and your presentation and communication skills. A host of employers look for accuracy, thoroughness and clarity in translation, and you certainly will have proven yourself, simply by rising to the challenge of this industry-requested course.

If you have a Bachelor’s degree from a UK University, you do not need to take an English proficiency test. Non-native English speakers who do not meet this requirement must take a University-recognised test of academic English language proficiency: IELTS or TOEFL. The required IELTS minimum proficiency level is 6.5. For TOEFL, the minimum scores are as follows: 580 for the paper-based test; 237 for the computer-based test (with an essay rating of 5.0); and a score of 93 for the internet-based test.
