Student focused learning

All staff are committed to a student focused approach to teaching making your learning needs a priority in both what we teach and how we teach you. You will be taught by individuals who are active in their research areas and use the latest research findings to inform their teaching.

Throughout your degree you will also be expected to be an active participant in your learning and staff will make psychology teaching stimulating and challenging. A range of teaching methods are used from traditional lectures to problem focused learning sessions and include practical sessions and workshops, whilst also learning to test your own ideas and reflect on your experiences.

With regard to assessment, formal examinations using different formats and a range of coursework methods will allow you to develop your academic skills and provide an opportunity for you and us to assess your progress.

Some students start their degrees with clear ideas of what they want to do after graduation, but for others career paths are less certain. For all, the university process is about intellectual and personal development. During your time with us you will be supported in all aspects of your university life to find the direction that you want to follow.

Learning through the medium of Welsh

For those whose first language is Welsh or those that would feel more comfortable conversing in Welsh then there will be sufficient opportunities to reinforce your learning through the medium of Welsh. Psychology can be a technical subject and some students may find it easier to discuss and learn through the medium of Welsh.

Aberystwyth University has a strong commitment to teaching through Welsh and have also identified Psychology of particular importance for providing and developing Welsh medium teaching. Consequently, the Department of Psychology have been awarded a Welsh Medium Teaching Fellow by the Welsh Medium Teaching Centre to support and develop teaching and learning in Welsh.

If you are keen to develop your ability to understand psychology through Welsh you will be provided with the opportunity to participate in Welsh medium seminar and tutorial groups.
