Psychology in top 3 in UK student satisfaction poll

09 August 2017

Aberystwyth University has been ranked one of the top three places in the UK for overall satisfaction by final-year undergraduates studying Psychology.

The results of the 2017 National Student Survey show overall student satisfaction in the Department of Psychology at 96%, placing it in third place across a total of 109 similar departments in the UK.

Student satisfaction with assessment and feedback for Psychology was 92% (top in the UK), academic support 93% (top in the UK), learning resources 95% (2nd in the UK) and learning opportunities 91% (2nd in the UK).

Students questioned for the annual poll also gave impressive scores to two of the Department’s flagship undergraduate degree programmes.

Our C800 Psychology degree scheme was ranked at an outstanding 97% for student satisfaction with CM89 Psychology & Criminology at 91%.

Professor Nigel Holt, Head of Psychology at Aberystwyth University, said: “'Our NSS results in 2016 were exceptional in Psychology, and these 2017 results show that excellent service to students is consistent and to be expected from us here.  The headline figure of 96% satisfaction overall is an indication of our promise of excellence to students but the detailed figures are the showstoppers for me. Compared to 109 others in the sector, in many areas we come right at the top. It’s a reflection of how engaged the staff and students are here in Aber and it shows how our first-class staff help nurture and develop students’ learning and experience here in Psychology.

“This is on top of the news we had recently that 98% of our graduates are in work or further study within 6 months of leaving us, it just shows that we have developed the department and courses to give students what they need, both when they are with us, and when they leave and enter the world of work.”

If you’re interested in studying at Aberystwyth University’s Psychology Department and finding out why our students are so satisfied with their courses, it’s not too late. We still have some clearing places left for the 2017-18 academic year or come along and visit us during one of our Open Days.

The achievements of the Department of Psychology are part of a wider success story for Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top five higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction, according to the 2017 NSS.

The latest results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 91%, well above the UK figure of 84%.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 98% of Psychology degree graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving Aberystwyth University in 2016.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of the UK’s higher education funding councils and interviews more than 300,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Students are asked to rate their university across a wide range of measures including quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, learning community and student voice.

Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
