Why study psychology?

Psychology requires you to develop your understanding of the most complex structure - the human brain. You will learn how the brain works and how it influences every aspect of human activity. As part of your studies with us in all our degree schemes you will gain insight into the complexities of human behaviour and begin to understand the puzzle of why we behave the way we do asking questions such as “do our genes or society influence our behaviour most”, “what is the optimal way to resolve conflict” and “why is learning a second language so challenging for adults?”.

Few subjects can challenge psychology for its breadth or depth of knowledge. We use this to our advantage to develop psychology graduates that are employable, as well as creative and imaginative thinkers who can apply their analytical skills to a wide range of situations whether within psychology, other disciplines, or in the work place. Your mastery of analytical and applied skills and strategies will stand you in good stead throughout your career in which ever career you choose.

Theory development and investigation are at the core of psychology at Aberystwyth and studying both will develop your ability to understand human interaction. From the beginning of your degree you will be introduced to the key ideas, theories and research findings that make up contemporary psychology. You will be introduced to the central concepts in social psychology, individual differences, biological psychology, and will start the process of developing the skills you need to investigate human behaviour as you learn the research methods employed by psychologists. You will be taught how to apply this training to investigate your own questions and communicate your findings.

Irrespective of course choice, all your learning will be set in the context of its application to real world problems. Each year of our degrees has been carefully thought through to enable you to develop and refine your thinking about psychology providing both stretch and challenge as you work towards graduation. At Aberystwyth, you will be able to study for either a single honours or joint honours psychology degree. However, both modes of study are studied over three years and benefit from the same learning context and environment that psychology at Aberystwyth provides.
