Computer Science

Whether computers are operating smoothly or, as sometimes, behaving unexpectedly, to many people they remain more or less a mystery. Computers are not, however, mysterious. Their behaviour is the product of their design, which in turn is the product of computer scientists and software engineers.

Computer Science seeks out the new ideas that lie at the heart of computer software and hardware. Fundamentally, it is about generalising from specific problems, a process known as abstraction. It is a saying among computer scientists that simplicity follows complexity. The techniques of abstraction and generalisation can make plain the problems and their solutions that lie at the core of complex systems.
