European Languages at Aberystwyth

The Council for Higher Education and Industry recently said:

'We think that in future all those whose higher education is in the humanities should expect to have a working command of at least one foreign language, written and spoken', and in 1997 the following quotation appeared in the THES: 'The managers of the future must be totally "international", live in a single, unique universe also rich in differences'.

This quotation demonstrates that European Language graduates are sought after by employers. Whilst they have acquired the same skills as other Humanities students (written/oral presentation; critical analysis; the ability to develop a structured argument), students of European Languages have a major advantage over other graduates: they have had to live independently in at least one foreign country and have learned the important social skill of communicating with other people. Employers have a high regard for this independence, social confidence and advanced linguistic competence. Former students have found employment in the public and private sectors. Some have become teachers, translators, administrators, managers, army officers, journalists and lawyers.
