Appendix 1 - Deputy Dean of the Faculty: Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist and when necessary act for the Dean in matters of academic and Faculty policy.

2. In the absence of the Dean, to chair meetings of the Faculty (subject to the Standing Orders) and its sub-committees, deputise on other committees and fulfil other functions as necessary.

3.  To prepare an annual summary of External Examiners’ reports and departmental responses highlighting such matters that should be brought to the attention of Faculty and Academic Affairs Committee.

4. To co-ordinate and maintain an overview of the process of reviewing new and restructured module proposals.

5.  To serve as a member of Approval Panels established by the Faculty to consider new and restructured schemes of study.

6. To assist the Dean in assessing applications for AU’s Postgraduate Research Studentships.

7.  To maintain an overview of the Faculty’s role in quality assurance as set out in the Quality Handbook for Staff.

8. From time to time, at the request of the Dean or the Faculty, to review aspects of policy and practice and to submit proposals for consideration by Faculty.

9.   To be a member ex officio of specified AU Committees, e.g. Academic Affairs Committee, Rules and Regulations Committee and the Learning and Teaching Strategy Implementation Group.

10. To serve as Faculty Representative on ad hoc university committees or working groups e.g. committees of inquiry into allegations of unfair practice.
