Handing-Over Notes for Deans of Faculties

1.0 Introduction

1.1  Faculty Role

The Deans are appointed by university panels. They chair meetings of the Faculties and any Faculty sub-committees, unless they specifically delegate these duties to other individuals. They are responsible for the conduct of the business set out in the Standing Orders of the Faculties. They also represent Faculty views at Senate, Academic Affairs Committee and other University committees on which they serve, and report back to the Faculty on the meetings of University committees. In this work they are supported by the Faculty Secretaries.

1.2 Collective Roles

The Deans also meet together regularly to discuss issues related to teaching quality and standards with the aim of promoting consistency across the three Faculties and generating initiatives to put before the Faculties or University Committees. They also have specific collective duties such as judging the annual research studentship competition. In this work they are supported by the administrative and secretarial staff in the Deans’ Office. Their principal responsibilities are set out in more detail below.
