Good Research Practice
4.0 Ethics
4.1 Issues for Research Involving Human Participants
This aspect is covered by guidelines developed in June 2002, in a separate policy document establishing a A.U. Committee (The Ethics Committee on Research Procedures) to review and to give consent to research work involving human participants. Ethical issues are of particular importance in areas such as Sport and Exercise Science, in other sciences and in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The Ethics Committee on Research Procedures is a joint committee of Senate and Council, and it has representation from each of the Faculties as well as substantial lay membership. Prior to the establishment of in-house guidelines research projects requiring review were sent to the NHS Local Research Ethics Committee.
4.2 Ethical Review Committee
The University has an Ethical Review Committee in compliance with Home Office requirements of the Scientific Procedures Act 1986. The Registrar and Secretary is the certificate holder and the committee meets quarterly. It has external membership, including veterinary and medical expertise.
