Responsibilities

Gary Reed is the Director of Research, Business & Innovation at Aberystwyth University. He manages a team of c.35 people covering research support and development, business development and technology transfer, large RB&I project management and quality assurance, and REF and research monitoring. Gary's team also work closely with Research Grants, who are co-located with RBI and report to the Finance Director.

Gary reports to the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Quality Assurance and works with the Research Committee to implement the University's Research Strategy by working closely with academic departments and other service departments.

 As part of his remit, Gary is also:

  • Head of Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities' Strategic Alliance Office
  • Gary was the 2011-12 Chair of the Welsh Research Office Liaison Officers Network (WROLOS) and is the Aberystwyth Representative on the St. David's Day Group of Universities (Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glamorgan and Swansea) Operations Group.

 

Biography

Currently Director of Research, Business & Innovation, and also seconded to the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education as the Assistant Director, (Membership), Wales.

Prior to my current roles, I was a management academic at Loughborough University for 10 years roles included: Director of Research for the Centre of Automotive Management and Programme Director for the MSc and Diploma in Automotive Management. Previous experience includes: telecommunications systems sales, qualified secondary school teacher, FE College lecturer, and retail experience.

Other roles: invited member of the Leadership Foundation Membership Advisory Group; external examiner Loughborough University School of Business & Economics.

Project Management: at Loughborough University, I co-authored, costed and managed over c.£1.5M of successful research grants to research councils and industry. At Aberystwyth I am responsible for c. £80M of active research and enterprise grants and c. £21M of annual research income. My project management experience includes a number of major projects with a total value of c. £70M e.g.  the HEFCW £11M funded Aberystwyth & Bangor Universities Research & Enterprise Partnership, which exceeded all targets and expectations.

People Development: as well as being a qualified teacher and academic, I have a keen interest in researcher development, which includes leading three successful applications at Aberystwyth University for the European HR Excellence in Research Award. I am the Welsh Crucible (http://www.welshcrucible.org.uk) Champion for Aberystwyth University and take an active role in the development and delivery of this programme.
