What support is available to staff wishing to offer consultancy services?

From initial discussions regarding market opportunities through to contractual arrangements and payment processing, RB&I offers a range of services to support staff to deliver consultancy services.  RB&I works on behalf of staff and client companies to ensure that consultancy projects are undertaken under properly agreed contracts.

Types of university consultancy

Academic Consultancy:

The consultancy will be performed by a member of staff within their area of academic, research or administrative expertise and is delivered in addition to normal duties. 

Key features:

  • can involve the use of University resources, intellectual property, know-how and other resources
  • is covered by the University’s professional indemnity insurance.
  • staff entitled to undertake 30 days within an academic year.
  • income disbursement: staff time: 80% to the member of staff, 15% to the University and 5% to the relevant department. Income received from the use of any major facilities shall be retained by the department.

AU Commercial Services

The consultancy will be performed by a member of staff within their  area of academic, research or administrative expertise and is delivered as part of the staff member’s duties.

Key features:

  • can involve the use of University resources, intellectual property, know-how and other resources
  • is covered by the University’s professional indemnity insurance.
  • the number of days allowed is subject to the Institute Director.
  • income disbursement: All income: 80% to the department and 20% to the University. Income received from the use of any major facilities shall be retained by the department

What should I do if a company approaches me to provide consultancy services? 

Contact RB&I as soon as possible and,following discussions with yourself, RB&I will negotiate a price for the work and put in place appropriate contractual arrangements.  Following the completion of the work RB&I will invoice the client company and distribute revenue from consultancy work in accordance with the agreement.
