Entrance Scholarship information for schools and colleges

We would like to thank you for considering allowing your students to sit the Entrance Scholarship examinations at your school/college.  We are very grateful to all institutions who agree to host the examinations and we aim to facilitate this with as little disruption to you as possible.  Aberystwyth University's Entrance Scholarships are long-established and prestigious - success brings recognition for the student, and their schools/colleges.

This page is aimed at providing information on how the Entrance Scholarship competition is administered, as well as what will be required of you and when.

Any information which arises regarding the examinations, e.g. what to do in the case of inclement weather, amendments to question papers, etc. will be posted here if and when necessary, so it would be a good idea to check back here fairly regularly during the run-up to the exams.

Timeline of events:

Date What happens
Sept - Jan Students request permisison from their Headteacher/Principal and Examinations Officer to sit the exams at your school/college.
 15th Jan latest

Students return application forms to the University.

Special considerations: Students are asked to inform us and their Exam Officers if they are entitled to extra time for their examinations.  Where students are entitled to 25% extra for external exams, they will also be entitled to 25% extra for the Entrance Scholarship exams (i.e. 2½ hours per paper, instead of 2 hours).  Students are also entitled to any other allowances as per external exams (e.g. use of word processor / scribe).  We require a short letter of confirmation of requirements from schools/colleges - this can be posted, faxed or emailed to us.

 End of Jan

The University will send Examinations Officers all the materials required, i.e.

  • Candidate List
  • Examination papers
  • Answer booklets
  • A Timetable - so you know which exams will be on which dates (although we expect the exams to be taken as timetabled whenever possible, schools/colleges are permitted to exercise discretion within the 3 day examination period)
  • Notes on the Conduct of the Entrance Scholarship Examinations
  • A return envelope, with recorded delivery slip and acknowledgement card - please ensure that you include sufficient postage

End of March The University will write to all candidates and their Headteachers/Principals, informing them of their success, or otherwise, in the examinations.
Mid-April Once we have received responses from all candidates, we will publish the names of Scholars and the names of their schools/colleges in the national press and on our website.  The names of Merit Award holders (candidates who did not obtain a Scholarship but whose performance in the competition was deemed worthy enough to receive recognition) and names of their schools/colleges are also published on our website.
