Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards at Aberystwyth – Frequently Asked Questions

The following applies to full-time undergraduate applicants beginning their studies in 2012:

What type of Scholarships and Awards do you have?

We have a range of Scholarships – some are income contingent and support our widening access policies, others are to reward academic excellence, sporting and musical achievements.

What support do you have for high flyers, to reward Excellence?

Our long-established Entrance Scholarship competition (where you sit two 2-hour exams which are set and marked by the University departments), Excellence Bursaries in specified subjects (awarded on the basis of your A-level results / equivalent qualifications), Sports Bursaries for those who have recently achieved a high standard in their chosen sport, Music Bursaries to support gifted orchestral musicians.

What provision to you have to help students who are less well off?

Aberystwyth Bursaries, which are new for 2012, of up to £1,100 a year for those with a household income below £34,090, Residential Bursaries, which are an £800 discount off your first year’s accommodation fee, so that students from all backgrounds can experience the unique learning and residential experience that exists at Aberystwyth, Care Leaver Bursaries of up to £1,800 a year for those who have spent a period of time in care before their sixteenth birthday.

Are all of your awards income-contingent?

No – only the Aberystwyth Bursary; all the other awards are open to all applicants, regardless of parental income.

What benefits, other than financial, can I expect?

Apart from the obvious kudos and enhancement to your CV:

  • Entrance Scholarships – an Unconditional offer, guaranteed accommodation for the duration of the course.
  • Merit Awards – an Unconditional offer.
  • Sports Bursaries – free Club Sporty membership of the University’s Sports Centre for each year of study, guaranteed accommodation for the duration of the course, support from the Sports Bursary Mentor.
  • Music Bursaries – free membership of all Music Centre and affiliated ensembles, free use of Music Centre practice, library and other facilities, guaranteed University accommodation for the duration of the course.
  • Care Leaver Bursaries – support from a Mentor within the Centre from Widening Participation and Social Inclusion, from pre-entry through to graduation.

Can I hold more than one award at the same time?

Yes! You can hold either an Entrance Scholarship or a Merit Award or an Excellence Bursary together with ANY or ALL of our other awards – Aberystwyth Bursary, Residential Bursary, Sports Bursary, Music Bursary, Care Leaver Bursary.

Do I have to have applied for a course in a certain subject area in order to be considered for an award?

No – although Excellence Bursaries are restricted to specified courses, you can hold an Entrance Scholarship, Merit Award, Aberystwyth Bursary, Residential Bursary, Sports Bursary, Music Bursary and Care Leaver Bursary for ANY of our courses.

Do I have to apply for all the awards separately?

There are separate application forms for Entrance Scholarships, Sports Bursaries and Music Bursaries, but you don’t need to apply at all for Excellence Bursaries or Residential Bursaries – if you are eligible, you will automatically receive them.  All you need to do is to apply to Aberystwyth via UCAS by 30th June and place us as your Firm choice.  For Aberystwyth Bursaries, we will access the financial information you provide to the Student Loans Company and use that to assess your eligibility, so again you don’t need to apply separately for them.

Why is the Aberystwyth funding package so SPECIAL?

Because, unlike many institutions, all of our awards (with the exception of the Care Leaver Bursary) are open to students from ALL parts of the UK and EU.

Around 60% of our students receive a Scholarship, Bursary or Award of some kind.

Don’t take our word for it – recent studies by OpinionPanel Research show that Aberystwyth has the BEST range of Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards of any university in the UK!  We are committed to maintaining and enhancing this level of support, and our student surveys are testament to this.
