After learning Welsh in the early 80s, I taught Welsh as a second language to many people in the Aberystwyth area. In the late 80s, I ran my own business called ‘Iaith ar Daith’ providing a variety of Welsh for Adults courses including a course for parents and young children. After many years as a Welsh for Adults tutor at Aberystwyth University and Ceredigion County Council, and there being no sign at that time of a permanent job in that field I changed direction working part time for GWELED, the Welsh Association of Visual Arts, between 1991 and 1998. In 1996 I was appointed Co-ordinator for CYD, a charity based organization aimed at assisting Welsh learners to use the language they had learnt in class. I acquired my present post in 2007, a year or so after the Mid Wales Welsh for Adults Centre opened at Aberystwyth.
I am particularly interested in the field of teaching Welsh as a second language to small children and their parents and/or other members of the extended family. I believe it is a field that has the potential to reinstate the Welsh language on a wide scale if strong support would be made available from the Welsh Assembly Government.
