2010 BASES Annual Student Conference

A warm welcome and an invitation to join us . . .

Welcome to the website for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) 2010 Annual Student Conference hosted by The Department of Sport and Exercise Science, Aberystwyth University. In these pages you will find helpful information about the conference, including the scientific and social programmes, the keynote speakers, abstract submission, delegate registration, exhibitor registration, and ways to get involved.

The Department of Sport and Exercise Science is proud to be hosting the 2010 student conference and we hope that you will come along and take part. We look forward to meeting you in Aberystwyth on 31 March and 1 April, 2010. The student conference has established itself as an important forum for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to meet and network with other sport and exercise science students, practitioners and researchers. The conference is an excellent opportunity for students to present their research in a supportive and flexible environment, and to encourage relevant scientific discussions and potential collaborations. As well as seeing other students present their research, the programme includes a number of keynote lectures and workshops (click here for a list of keynote speakers).

The theme of the conference is “Key Skills in Sport and Exercise Science”. We will be incorporating a postgraduate careers fair (where students will be able to secure postgraduate positions at various UK institutions) in additional to a number of workshops on key skills for Sport & Exercise Science students and graduates (such as publishing in Sport & Exercise Science, combining Research and Practice training etc.). Keynote speakers include Professor Andy Jones, Professor Steve Haake, Dr Nicola Callow, Dr Marc Jones, Dr Joanne Thatcher, Professor David Gilbourne plus a range of other academics and practitioners.

Aber-Bangor Skills Centre

Introduction

The Aber-Bangor Skills Centre (A-BSC) is a HEFCW-funded initiative which builds on the strong partnership between Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities, working alongside the Sector Skills Councils (SSC) and collaborating with private and public sector organisations in North and Mid Wales.

The A-BSC is a virtual centre which has been created to offer companies better access to the skills training provision at both Universities, and also to give them the opportunity to help in the development of new provision for individuals and business. A friendly one-stop skills shop, the A-BSC will assist individuals, graduates and local enterprises to easily access the expertise and resources of the two universities.

By bringing together local businesses, Sector Skills Councils and the two Universities, the A-BSC will ensure skills provision in the region is highly individualised and relevant to the needs of local employers, thus impacting on the Knowledge Economy of Wales.

The Aber-Bangor Skills Centre (A-BSC) is proud to be a sponsor of The British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences annual Student Conference 2010 hosted by Aberystwyth  University.

On the first day of the event A-BSC will be running a Undergraduate Skills Workshop focused on Networking. During this session we will highlight the importance to students of effective networking to enhance their profile and their understanding of the role networking can play in business.

The second day of the event will see A-BSC host a workshop involving Dynamo Role Models, who currently practice within in differing sectors of industry. This session will provide an opportunity for Undergraduates to hear about firsthand experiences of people who have set up their own business. Students will gain knowledge of practical issues/problems which these role models encountered.

A-BSC will also have a presence throughout the event.

Free pre-conference workshop

The student conference team at Aberystwyth is pleased to announce that a free preconference workshop will be given by Professor Jo Doust and Dr Richard Tong on the evening of Tuesday March 30. The workshop is focused on building a career in sport and exercise science and is in-keeping with the conference theme of “Unlocking Your Future.” Delegates will learn how to tailor their CVs to potential employers, how to develop the experiences and qualifications to set them apart from other applicants, and strategies for securing successful careers in the sport and exercise sciences. Delegates will also be able to network with each other and two of the leading sport and exercise scientists in the United Kingdom. If interested, just indicate on the registration form that you would like to attend.

Affordable

One of our key aims was to ensure that the conference is affordable for all students. So we have kept the cost to a minimum and meals, refreshments, registration, accommodation and the conference dinner are all inclusive in the price. Click here for further information.
