Student Wins 2007 Undergraduate H.T.A Whiting Prize
10 June 2007
Christian Edwards (2007 BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
graduate) has been awarded the prestigious Annual British
Psychological Society Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology
H.T.A. Whiting Undergraduate Dissertation Prize. His
dissertation, entitled "The effect of motivational and
instructional self-talk on power production during the vertical
jump test in University rugby union players" used biomechanical
data and psychological interventions in an attempt to improve
specific performance skills, such as contesting a line-out.
He was supervised by Dr David Tod.
The dissertation is
a major component of third year study, in which students design,
conduct and interpret a research study investigating an area of
their own interest, with specialist guidance or "supervision"
from a member of academic staff with expertise in the area of
study. The dissertation provides an excellent foundation
for further postrgraduate study. Christian has begun a
Masters degree and hopes to continue his studies to PhD level in
the future.
