Profile

Chris joined Aberystwyth University in October 2012. He is Professor of Human Behavioural Science, and Director of Research for the Institute of Human Sciences. He is a Chartered Psychologist (Health) and previously held posts at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit (Warwick Medical School) and the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (University of York). Chris also served for seven years in the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment.

Research

Chris has expertise in the development and evaluation of theory-driven behavioural interventions, and the design, conduct and analysis of randomised controlled trials and evidence syntheses.

Current projects:

  • Health Technology Appraisal Review Team (NIHR: £5m)
  • Prevention of fall-related injuries in community-dwelling older people (NIHR: £2.4m)
  • Physical activity to slow cognitive decline in people with dementia (HTA: £1.3m)         
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises for rheumatoid arthritis of the hand (HTA £975k)

  • Behaviour change among people with severe mental illness (RfPB)  
  • Written emotional disclosure for depression in type 2 diabetes (D-UK)
  • Behaviour change interventions for socially disadvantaged groups (The King’s Fund)
  • Computer-based expert system for tailored smoking cessation advice (ESRC)
