Indoor Facilities
Swimming Pool
Our swimming pool is 25 yards long and 10 yards wide. The pool is open for general swimming at set times of the week.
The pool is also used by The University's swimming, water polo, canoeing and sub aqua clubs. Details for these clubs can be found through the Athletic Union pages.
We also run various swimming classes during the term, so whether you are a complete beginner or wanting to improve your strokes or earn your Bronze Medallion for Lifesaving, then you can sign up and join in.
Saunarium
What is a Nordic Saunarium? It is a timber cabin which offers a bathing environment between a dry sauna and a wet steam room. The balanced combination of heat and humidity generates a 'tropical' atmosphere, which is both relaxing and invigorating.
Wellness Centre
The Wellness Centre is extremely popular and facilitates quality health and fitness training. It provides the very best fitness equipment on the market and caters for all levels of exerciser, from the complete beginner to elite athlete. Those needing rehabilitation from injury or illness can work through the restricted range machines on offer.
'Spin 2 Win' - Indoor Cycling Sessions
Indoor group cycling classes are available within the gym. The Sessions are led by a qualified Instructor combining instruction on basic cycling movements, motivation and fitness drills. The bikes enable you to control your own exertion levels while still enjoying the motivation of a group session. Spin 2 Win innovations creates a unique experience that has transformed the essence of group exercise.
Climbing Wall
Whether you're new to climbing, an old hand, or somewhere in between, come and experience the excitement of rock climbing at the University Sports Centre's state-of-the-art indoor climbing wall, 'Box Rox'. Find out more about what's on offer and how to get involved at Indoor Climbing Wall.
Free Weights Room
The Free Weights Room offers you a more specific and 'natural' form of training. The comprehensive range of strength conditioning machines and wide selection of loose weights facilitates specificity when it comes to your chosen sport or training goals. The facility is available to experienced weight users as well as newcomers who require more assistance from our staff.
Dance Room
The Dance Room was recently refurbished and is now a wonderful place to workout. There is a wooden sprung floor that alleviates any impact on the legs - as well as mirrored walls to help you see how your body is working.
We hold many of our aerobic and dance classes up here. We also run Tai Chi, Yoga, Ballroom and Latin American dancing lessons in this room. Check out the Recreation Scheme at the beginning of each term to see which classes you would like to join in.
Squash Courts
There are 2 squash courts available (1 Sports Hall, 2 Sports Cage) which may be booked up to 6 days ahead. There is a £1.00 per 40 minute session charge for lighting - except at specified club times. Coaching lessons are available for both beginners and intermediate players.
You may hire a racket from reception for £1. There is a thriving student squash league where all levels are welcome. There is also another league in the local town leisure centre.
Main Sports Hall
The main sports hall is large enough for 3 badminton courts. It is also used for volleyball, basketball, karate, fencing, boxercise, circuit training and other sports games. It has a wooden sprung floor and large windows that let in plenty of light. You can book the sports hall at certain times to practice or to play - this is free of charge to all members of the Sports Centre. Further details on how to become a member of the Sports Centre can be obtained from the Membership Secretary on 621 521.
Sports Cage
The sports cage is the second sports hall on the campus and is large enough for 6 badminton courts, or 2 volleyball, 2 indoor tennis, 1 basketball court, 2 netball courts, an indoor hockey pitch or a 5-a-side soccer pitch. This is used extensively by the sports clubs.
