Health and Wellbeing
Welcome
Investing in employee health and well-being improves business competitiveness
- Wealth from Health 2007
The Universities greatest resource is its staff, and provision of a healthy campus to work in provides a strong foundation to nurture a happy, healthy and committed workforce.
Why bother being active?
- The concept that being fit means that you can run without effort, or do a hundred sit-ups can be seen as outdated and misleading.
- Being healthy is about enjoying life and having the energy to do all the things you want to.
- Being active offers you great benefits in terms of health – it provides protection against many diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity or bowel cancer. In small stages that add up to 30 minutes a day, it is within everyone’s reach to aim for good health.
- Integrating activity into your daily life is sometimes easier than setting aside and hour to go to the gym. Research indicates that these bouts of activities are as valid as 30 minutes sustained activity.
- There is measurable value in “taking the stairs and not the lift” on your physical and mental health.
- Incorporating activity into your working day can help – whether that is walking to meetings, walking to see a colleague instead of sending an email, or even parking your car further away from the office.
- Small increases impact strongly on your health and well-being.
What can I do?
First and most importantly, chose something that you enjoy. Then see if you can rope in a colleague to give you some added motivation... on campus we have the following:-
- Gym - There are 3 gyms on campus for you to use. The gyms are open at 7.15am until 9.30pm during the week and 9 – 4pm on the weekend. We have trained staff on duty during the day to help you with your workout, or to show you how to use the machines correctly.
- Pool and Saunarium - Our pool is open from 7.15am so that you can swim, shower and change before work. We stay open until 9pm and have a weekly staff only swim session.
- Exercise and Spinning Classes - we have a range of classes to suit your fitness needs. Classes over the lunch hour run for 45 minutes, so that you have time to get here, get changed and get back to work in good time. Evening classes start at 5.15pm - you can pay monthly through your salary, or pay as you go.
- All Weather Pitch - available to play football, touch rugby or hockey - why not get a team from your department to join our "Aber Play Sport" intra-mural scheme? It is free to members, and a small charge for all other staff.
- Badminton - staff only badminton every Friday evening, or come along during the day and book a court - free to Sports Centre Members
- Walks on Campus - The university has three marked walk ways that take in some of the rare trees planted on campus. Walks start from the Sports Centre, and routes of 20, 30 and 40 minutes are available. Come and collect a map, or follow the coloured posts that you may see on campus.
