Need Help

If you get into difficulties with money the important thing is to talk to someone about it. Don’t ignore the problem as it will only get worse.

There are sources of additional funding available.

  • Aberystwyth Alumni Student Hardship Fund - thanks to the generosity of Aberystwyth's Alumni through the Annual Fund the University is able to offer financial support to students who may find themselves in serious financial crisis through no fault of their own.  The aim of this provision is to provide support to students in real hardship as a result of unforeseen factors such as a change in personal circumstances or an emergency at home leading to a temporary suspension of financial support.  This fund is available to UK, EU  and international students.  Please visit reception on the 3rd floor of the Student Welcome Centre to enquire about this fund, an appointment with the Student Finance Adviser may be necessary.

Failure to Meet Outgoings

If you find you cannot pay your tuition or accommodation fees speak to the Student Fees section at the University as soon as possible.

Sanctions may be imposed against students who are in debt to the University (for example, not being allowed to re-enrol) so it is important that you explain your situation as it may be possible to negotiate a repayment plan.

If you cannot pay your rent contact your landlord to see whether you can negotiate a part payment or whether you can pay at a later date. Sometimes Loan/Grant payment dates are out of step with when rent is due.

If you exceed your agreed overdraft limit speak to your bank as soon as possible. Always pay your priority debts first and think carefully before using a credit card to meet costs that you think cannot be met by any other means.

Dealing With Debt

If the situation is really bad you will need to negotiate with your creditors a repayment proposal. This should be based on a realistic estimate of what YOU CAN AFFORD not what your creditors want.
