What is the Peter Hancock Fund?

The Peter Hancock Fund awards grants for 'deserving, meritorious, in-need final year Honours students or equivalent in any discipline and of any nationality and who show potential to benefit society through the successful completion of their Honours Degrees or equivalent.'

How do I apply for the scholarship?

You will also be asked to provide supporting documents, including:

  • A personal statement addressing specific selection criteria questions
  • A written reference from your personal tutor who can comment on your academic performance and other personal characteristics

Where do I submit an application?

Completed forms should be e-mailed to: student-adviser@aber.ac.uk (Please note that we can accept good quality images of supporting documents if you are unable to provide a scan).

How are the scholarship applications assessed?

The Peter Hancock Fund applications are determined by the Selection Panel in collaboration with the Donors. Once the scholarship has closed, all the applications are assessed and ranked by the Panel according to the specific selection criteria of the scholarship and a short list of applicants with the Panel’s recommendations is sent to the Donors for their consideration and final selection.

This process takes a minimum of 6 weeks from the closing date.

Can I apply for a scholarship if I am studying part-time?

No, you must be enrolled as a full-time student undertaking a full Year 2 Honours or equivalent program.

Can I apply if I am not a UK Citizen or permanent resident?

Yes, The Peter Hancock Fund is open to home, EU and international students.

I am in dire financial hardship, will this scholarship help?

The application process is a competitive one - and there is no guarantee that you will be awarded an award from the Fund. It also takes time for applications to be reviewed and scholarship recipient to be chosen. If you are in dire financial need, please consider contacting Student Support to enquire about the hardship fund which will provide more immediate financial relief or you can contact the Students’ Union for a range of emergency support.

Can I keep my scholarship if I move to another institution?

The Peter Hancock Scholarship is not transferable to another university or institution.

Will I be taxed on my scholarship?

So long as you remain enrolled full time you will not be required to include your scholarship as part of your taxable income.

Can I work if I am receipt of a scholarship?

Yes, you can undertake occasional work if you receive a scholarship providing the University is satisfied that you are undertaking fulltime study at the University and that your work does not interfere with  your studies. The purpose of the scholarships is to reduce and as far as possible eliminate the need for work, particularly during term time, so that successful applicants can devote their time and efforts to their Year 2 Honours or equivalent studies. The scholarship will be terminated if the scholarship-holder is found to be in contravention of the spirit and regulations of the scholarship.
