Our Relationship with the Community

Facilities open to the public

Many of the University’s facilities are made available to the public. As students have priority of use, access to the public is naturally restricted and in some instances charges are made.

The facilities open to the public are the Arts Centre, the Library (for reference only), Sports Facilities, and the School of Art Galleries.

There is an annual programme of lectures which are open to the public.

A programme of recreational courses is provided each term.

Lifelong learning

We are committed to offering a diverse range of accredited, stand alone courses, Certificates of Higher Education, in the subject areas of Art and Design, Humanities, Modern Languages,  Science and Social Science, and Diplomas in Field and Conservation Ecology. All are available within the community across mid and west Wales. Our aim is to promote flexible access to higher education as well as enhancing students' understanding of the linguistic and cultural environment in which they live. We also offer a range of Welsh for Adults courses.

Students and the community

Aber has long enjoyed a reputation as a friendly university closely integrated into the local community. This stems in part from the long tradition of charitable work undertaken by the student-led RAG Aber RAG which has raised over £5m for a range of charities in recent years. This commitment to community activity has recently been strengthened through the activities of 'dim prob'. This has involved a large number of students each year in a range of community activities. These have included:

•  organising a summer barbecue and a Christmas party for local disadvantaged children

•  participation in community arts and cultural projects

•  Law students assisting the Citizen's Advice Bureau, the Samaritans and Women's Aid

•  building and decorating work for the elderly

•  fitting fire alarms for the elderly

•  helping pupils with learning difficulties at local primary schools

These and other worthwhile projects have brought students and members of the local community into closer involvement and harmony.
