Equality Champions

Aberystwyth University has a range of champions and engages with many internal and external networks to help consult, promote and share good practice on a range of equality and diversity areas.  For more information please contact Olymbia Petrou on opp@aber.ac.uk or 8598.

AU Equality Champions - Aberystwyth Equality Champions - A staff network of Equality Champions was launched in August 2011 to further promote equality and diversity across AU. Champions are advocates for equality and aim to raise awareness of the principles of equality throughout the University.

 

  Athena SWAN Charter/Champion – In May 2011 AU became Athena SWAN Charter members which recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.  Dr. Kate Bullen (kab@aber.ac.uk) Head of the Department of Psychology is our nominated Champion.

 

Stonewall Cymru Champions – In July 2011 AU joined the Stonewall Cymru Diversity Champions Programme ‘Britain's good practice forum for sexual orientation where employers can work with Stonewall, and each other, to promote diversity in the workplace’.

Aberystwyth Equality Champions (twice a semester) 

Our staff network of Equality Champions play a vital role in ensuring that equality and diversity is promoted across the University.

The Aber Staff LGB&T Network (Once a semester)

The Network was set up to allow LGB&T staff to socialise, network, explore relevant professional issues, and enjoy events such as film showings and reading groups.

Accessibility Forum (Once a semester)

The Accessibility Forum actively discusses and promotes disability equality and engages / consults with staff and students on disability support, issues and initiatives.  Members of staff and students with disabilities are encouraged to participate in the forum.

Disability Coordinators (Once a month)

Our network of Disability Coordinators, which are located within each department, discuss various disability issues, initiatives and share good practice on disability support.

Women's Roundtable (Once a semester)

The Women’s Roundtable meets once a semester to discuss and promote gender equality and engage with staff on support, issues and initiatives, e.g. Athena Swan, Equal Pay and mentoring.

Networks - External

Ceredigion Equality and Confidence Group (Quarterly)

Organised by Dyfed-Powys Police and attended by various representatives of the community, e.g. disability campaigners, LGB&T reps, age concern, victim support. This group discusses local equality issues and statistics in respect of offences against minority groups.

Equality Challenge Unit Welsh Liaison Group (Quarterly)

Advisory group facilitated by the Chief Executive of the Equality Challenge Unit providing an opportunity for equality practitioners within Welsh Universities to discuss issues of common interest, share information and good practice. 

Equality and Human Rights Commision Equality Exchange (Wales) (Quarterly)

Equality Exchange network promotes the exchange of effective and innovative employment practice for employers, trainers and consultants committed to achieving equality in the workplace.  Membership includes regular events across Wales on key equality issues, the development of leadership to promote equality, building effective partnerships to achieve change, an Annual conference and networking opportunities.
