Equality Champions

Aberystwyth University has a range of champions and engages with many internal and external networks to help consult, promote and share good practice on a range of equality and diversity areas.  For more information please contact Ruth Fowler ruf@aber.ac.uk 8424.

AU Equality Champions - Aberystwyth Equality Champions - A staff network of Equality Champions was launched in August 2011 to further promote equality and diversity across AU. Champions are advocates for equality and aim to raise awareness of the principles of equality throughout the University.

 

  Athena SWAN Charter/Champion – In May 2011 AU became Athena SWAN Charter members which recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.  Dr. Kate Bullen (kab@aber.ac.uk) Head of the Department of Psychology is our nominated Champion.

 

Stonewall Cymru Champions – In July 2011 AU joined the Stonewall Cymru Diversity Champions Programme ‘Britain's good practice forum for sexual orientation where employers can work with Stonewall, and each other, to promote diversity in the workplace’.

Aberystwyth Equality Champions (twice a semester) 

Our staff network of Equality Champions play a vital role in ensuring that equality and diversity is promoted across the University.

Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team (6 times a year)

This strategy team is working towards the 2017 Athena SWAN (post May 2015) principles prior to Bronze award submission. 

The Aber Staff LGBT Network (Once a semester)

The Network was set up to allow LGBT staff to socialise, network, explore relevant professional issues, and enjoy events such as film showings and reading groups.

Disability Contact (Once a month)

Our network of Disability Contacts, which are located within each department, discuss various disability issues, initiatives and share good practice on disability support.

Networks - External

Ceredigion Equality and Confidence Group (Quarterly)

Organised by Ceredigion County Council and attended by various representatives of the community & public sector e.g. disability campaigners, LGBT reps, age concern, victim support. This group discusses local equality issues and statistics and sources of support.

Equality Challenge Unit Welsh Liaison Group (Quarterly)

Advisory group facilitated by the Chief Executive of the Equality Challenge Unit providing an opportunity for equality practitioners within Welsh Universities to discuss issues of common interest, share information and good practice. The Director of Equality for the University sits on this group.

Equality and Human Rights Commision Equality Exchange (Wales & South West) (Quarterly)

Equality Exchange network promotes the exchange of effective and innovative employment practice for employers, trainers and consultants committed to achieving equality in the workplace.  Membership includes regular events across Wales on key equality issues, the development of leadership to promote equality, building effective partnerships to achieve change, an Annual conference and networking opportunities.

rightThe Equality Champions Network meets 6 times a year for discussion of current issues and the sharing of best practise, as well as disseminating information about events and training in the university. There is a Voluntary Job Role (which can be found HERE) and named individuals are shown below. If you are interested in filling one of the vacancies shown - or from an area that isn't listed, please contact Ruth Fowler, Communications and Equalities Officer  to discuss on ruf@aber.ac.uk. We ask that Champions attend 4 of the 6 meetings and be available as a contact for queries and signposting to staff and students throughout the University.
