TFTS Students at Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival

29 September 2016

Last week (21-23 September), four students from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University represented the university as delegates at the 22nd Encounters International Short Film and Animation Festival at Bristol’s Watershed centre.

Successful applicants Will Wardle, Shaun Butler, Sally Kim and Jessica Bryant spent three days watching a full and very varied programme of high-quality international short film screenings, from documentaries and dramas, to animation and experimental works.

Dr. Greg Bevan, who organised the trip with the generous support of the university’s Aber Fund, said: “Encounters is a busy festival with typically packed cinemas and sold-out screenings. And yet it has an incredibly welcoming and supportive environment, which is clearly crucial for students at this particular stage in their career development. It was especially encouraging for our students to see student work in competition side by side with professional, independent films.”

The trip was also an opportunity for them to meet recently-appointed ILLCA creative associate Ben Thompson, short film programmer for the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. This marks another major development in TFTS’s continued collaboration with Mr Thompson, himself a graduate of the department.

Dr Bevan, who visited the Tribeca Film Festival with two TFTS students earlier this year, added: “I’ve been struck by Ben’s generosity to our students in terms of the time, energy and enthusiasm he has given them. We are very fortunate to be able to call Ben a friend of the department and university, and I am extremely excited by a number of other projects that we are currently discussing for the year to come.”

The trip was supported by the university’s Aber Fund - the giving programme for alumni, parents, staff and friends of the university to support projects that directly enrich student experience and development.
