Scenography and Theatre Design

Course Introduction

This new degree scheme takes a  radical and innovative approach to design in the context of making theatre and performance. Looking beyond the conventional boundaries of ‘set’, ‘costume’, ‘lighting’ and ‘sound’ design (which in themselves are acknowledged and examined), Scenography and Theatre Design takes a total view of the performance space and regards the organisation of this space  as an artistic and intellectual practice in its own right. Through a combination of theoretical and practical explorations, Scenography and Theatre Design critically examines a wide range of contemporary practices from playhouse theatre to site-specific performance, from environmental theatre to performance installation. The focus of the degree scheme is the development of your own design practice within or alongside the practice of theatre and performance.

The scheme employs a range of innovative teaching methods and assessment assignments, including multi-media lecture/demonstrations and audio/video/mixed-media student submissions. At the end of the course you will have acquired a broad range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills applicable to a variety of careers within the creative media and beyond. You will also take with you a portfolio of work generated as both physical material and as a personal web site constructed and developed during the scheme. It is also intended that the experience provided by the degree should enable the development and enhancement of your individual way of seeing and practice of making.

This degree scheme can be taken as a either a Single Honours degree or as a Joint Honors degree with a number of different subjects...follow these links for more information:
