Media and Communication Studies (P300)

  Course Introduction

This innovative, challenging and diverse degree scheme places students at the cutting edge of developments and debates in digital media and communication. At the dawn of the digital era, with increased growth in convergent multi-platform media interactions, important questions are raised about the sociological implications of our becoming producers as well as consumers of media content.

Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook are changing the nature of social networking; digital technologies enable us to self-publish to a global on-line community; we carry our ‘electronic lives’ wherever we go; we create Second Life parallel worlds in cyberspace, and we are under constant digital surveillance. This is the new reality and this degree is designed to explore and question the issues at its core.

This course has a special and distinctive digital media focus, offering a solid critical approach to investigating the key issues in the field together with a practice-based element. Uniquely, the degree enables you to combine the traditional and the new, developing dynamic insights into the nature of interactions between media texts, media audiences and media producers. Taking an exciting inter-disciplinary approach, you will encounter numerous academic traditions including communication and media studies, sociology, psychology, cultural studies (including digital and visual cultures), history, philosophy, linguistics and marketing.

Our award-winning Media & Communication Studies website even offers students the opportunity to publish their work to a global audience. In a rapidly evolving, dynamic media world, students pursuing this degree – showing initiative, imagination and originality – will be equipping themselves with the skills and knowledge to become the future driving forces of the industry.

The degree is designed to ensure that you have a solid theoretical grounding through core-module provision, whilst also giving you the opportunity to specialise in areas and approaches that you find especially interesting.
