Call for papers – ‘Media Convergence and Linguistic Diversity’, Conference at Aberystwyth 19-21 May 2010.

History / Background

The Mercator Network was established in 1988, following the European Commission’s decision to support research and information exchange concerning the minority languages of the European Union. The European Parliament published a number of significant reports and recommendations supporting the creation of specialist minority language networks in the field of media, education and legistlation, and Mercator-Media was established at Aberystwyth University. Today, the Mercator Institute at Aberystwyth University hosts a number of projects specialising in languages, creative and literary translation, media, publishing and culture, with much of the activity based around European and world-wide networks. Minority languages are very much at the forefront of the Mercator Institute’s misson, and most of its projects include these languages alongside state languages and transfrontier languages.

Mercator works with a number of institutions, universities, companies, agencies, associations and individuals across Europe and increasingly in other parts of the world. For more details, see pages of individual projects.
