How do artworks that appear antagonistic or absurd reveal inconsistencies and irrationalities in the construction and maintenance of geo-political border identities?

The PhD explores how artistic practices/interventions that appear absurd or antagonistic can reveal and reflect the inconsistencies and irrationalities at geo-political borders.

Although there has been much research undertaken into how Welsh artists have examined Welsh culture, identity, language, little has been given to how such issues operate at the Welsh/English border, particularly regarding Anglo-Welsh identity. There has been much emphasis on Irish and Scottish borders and identity, but how are Anglo-Welsh identities at the ‘fuzzy border’ of Wales/England imagined and how as artists do we visualise these differences?

Through the examination of the strategies that artists use to destabilise, unfix and reveal political systems at ambiguous geographical regions, the study aims to be of interest to scholars in the disciplines of geo-politics, visual and performance art, culture studies, anthropology and ethnography.
